BELT LEVELS & STRIPES
Belt Rank info - Ninjas.jpg
Belt Rank info - Solids.jpg

The belts levels at DMA are laid out in such a way that allows younger students the time needed to develop as a martial artist while still having opportunities to earn new belts.

It is important to note that the time spent at each rank are not set in stone ... meaning a student is expected to complete the requirements for the next rank before being allowed to test.

Check out the next section for more info on what goes into moving through the ranks on the way to Black Belt!

TESTING FOR A NEW RANK

Before being awarded a new rank at DMA, students will need to meet or exceed expectations in the following categories:

  • Attendance - Each rank has an expected amount of training time that is calculated at an average attendance of 2-3 classes per week.  Can a student test early?  Yes, that is possible, but only happens when a student is far exceeding expectations in every category .... this is at the discretion of a senior instructor.

  • Mastery of physical skills - Each rank comes with a set of physical martial arts skills that build on the last.  Students must meet an acceptable level of knowledge of these techniques and be able to perform them at the standard set by DMA's instructors.

  • Knowledge of martial arts terms and philosophy - As with the physical skills, each rank comes with a set of terms or philosophy that students will need to be able to answer or recite.  Our goal is to keep the terminology and philosophy up-to-date and relevant to our modern times and to the values of our families.  It takes a village!

  • Parental approval - For the school-aged kids, parent approval will be necessary to move on.  Again, we want to support your efforts in keeping kids accountable so they will be responsible adults.  Your approval will be for home behavior and academic performance.  Should you approve, we will also ask on testing day if their room is clean .... if the answer is yes, then all is good .... if the answer is no, then they will be told that they need to have their room clean before wearing their new rank.

  • Additional expectations - There will be additional expectations at certain ranks.  For example, moving from Yellow Belt to Green Belt is a big step from beginner to intermediate that may come with a goal-setting expectation.  Moving into the advanced ranks is also a big change made more significant by having a leadership opportunity in which a student plans and executes a project to benefit their community in a way that is meaningful to that student. Stay tuned for more on this!

Signing up for belt testing:  Once a student has met or exceeded the expectation of their rank advancement, they will be eligible to register for the next testing event.  THERE ARE NO TESTING FEES for color belts below black belt. Students and/or parents can register for testing at the front desk (we will be working on an online registration option as well).

Promotion events:  Students will have the opportunity to advance to the next rank periodically during the 3 week rotation.  Promotion days will be the Saturday at the end of week #3.  To see when the next promotion opportunity will be, check the DMA public calendar.

STUDIO RULES AND MARTIAL ARTS ETIQUETTE

1.    Bowing represents respect.  Students and staff are expected to show respect to the training area that we share by bowing on and off the mats.           Respect between junior students and their seniors and instructors should be mutual and is represented in martial arts by the bow.

2.    Saying ‘yes sir’ and ‘no sir.’  Students are expected to practice responding in a respectful and mindful manner when addressing their

instructors.  Our hope is that students will take that practice out of the dojo and improve the way they respond to parents, teachers, and others.

3.    Refer to instructors, staff, and senior students by their rank or with ‘sir’ or ‘ma’am.’

4.    Students should turn away from their instructor(s) when fixing their belt or uniform.

5.    Attire for classes is full martial arts uniform and belt or martial arts pants, belt, and Dynamic MA t-shirt during the summer months.  Shirts with

inappropriate language or images will not be allowed in class.

12.  Sparring is a skill that requires time, patience, and supervision.  Sparring will only be allowed in class or during special training sessions.

Students should not spar outside of these times.

13.  Anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be denied access to the dojo, period.  Smoking and vaping are also strongly prohibited in

the dojo as well as outside the front door.
