Self-Defense 101: Top 10 preventable causes of death

September 27, 2018

Self-Defense is so much more than kicking and punching.

As someone who teaches a fair amount of kicking and punching, I can honestly say that the majority of us will NEVER HAVE TO USE OUR KICKS AND PUNCHES TO DEFEND OURSELVES!  Now, I’m definitely going to teach and practice the physical skills that could be useful in the event of a threat, but I would be doing a disservice to my students and families if I didn’t also address different kinds of dangers--not getting attacked with a weapon, but threats to our health.

Here is a list of the top 10 causes of death in the U.S. according to a CDC report from 2017:

  1. Heart disease

  2. Cancer

  3. Unintentional injuries

  4. Chronic lower respiratory disease

  5. Stroke

  6. Alzheimer’s disease

  7. Diabetes

  8. Pneumonia and influenza

  9. Kidney disease

  10. Suicide

I can certainly understand that some of these may not be preventable, but there are some that we can defend ourselves against by making better choices and focusing on a healthy lifestyle.

An article on Medicalnewstoday.com (read the article here) talks about some ways that we can protect ourselves and lower our risk of contracting some of the biggest threats to our health and well-being.  Here are a few of those suggestions that I am adopting, or already have adopted, in my life.

  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet

  • Exercise regularly

  • Avoid sitting for extended periods of time

  • Reduce blood pressure

  • Quit or don’t smoke

  • Reduce alcohol consumption

  • Reduce stress

  • Avoid second-hand smoke, pollution, chemical fumes, etc.

If that list of the top 10 causes of death from the CDC didn’t get your attention, I don’t know what will!  It certainly opened my eyes to some of the most likely outcomes for my life if I continued an unhealthy and/or inactive lifestyle!

If you are like me and want to be alive for many more years, I would strongly urge you to adopt some, if not all, of the suggestions for improving your health for the long haul.

Another way you could look at it is like I teach in my classroom … One of the most powerful forms of leadership is LEADING BY EXAMPLE!  Teach others within your sphere of influence how they can improve their lives and ensure a long and healthy future, not only for them, but for those around them!

Stay tuned for more blog posts on ways we can improve our health so we will hopefully never have to face these threats!

Happy training!
