An afternoon with a master teacher

March 16, 2018

In Stewart Emery’s quote on Mastery, he says “mastery in one’s career and consciousness growth simply requires that we constantly produce results beyond and out of the ordinary.”

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to spend some time with someone whose life is the embodiment of this message, Kyoshi Dave Kovar.  Master Kovar, with 40+ years in the martial arts, owns and operates Kovar Systems. He also oversees the teaching of literally thousands of up-and-coming martial artists nationwide, and travels around the world helping martial arts teachers improve everything from running a successful business to being better teachers and role models.

On Sunday, I attended his workshop where he talked about cultivating a certain mindset within a team, and finding ways to better serve our students and community.  Among these are the following:

• WE ARE THE FRIENDLIEST PLACE IN TOWN.

• WE ARE THE CLEANEST PLACE IN TOWN.

• WE ONLY TEACH GREAT CLASSES, NEVER JUST GOOD CLASSES.

• WE ARE EXCELLENT AT STUDENT/PARENT COMMUNICATION.

One thing I absolutely love about any workshop where Master Kovar speaks is that he is 100% genuinely interested in making everyone around him better, and his enthusiasm reflects that.  I don’t know how he does it, but every time I see him, he makes me feel like I’ve been a part of his team my entire career! Truly a remarkable human being and an asset to the martial arts community.

Here’s my takeaway and reinforcement of what I already believe:

We (martial arts teachers) are here to serve our communities.

We are here to teach leadership, kindness, tolerance, honor, respect, and so much more through leadership that sets the example before expecting it from others.

We are responsible and accountable for being at our very best so that we can truly give.

Master Kovar, along with Masters Tom Callos, Dave McNeill, and Ernie Reyes, are a few of the people I deeply respect.  They have given me far more than I believe they will ever realize, and have all, at one time or another, shown personal interest in my self-improvement.  I am truly grateful to have these amazing martial artists in my life and, if I can pass along even a small amount of their wisdom, then I will leave this world better than I found it.

Thank you sirs.
