Lead by example

December 17, 2017

Yep, I said it!  Lead by example!  It's kind of at the heart of 'influence vs. authority,' and is embodied in the Ultimate Black Belt Test created by Tom Callos.  The UBBT is definitely not for the faint of heart as the expectation is to put oneself out there and LEAD BY EXAMPLE!!

In all honesty, I'm excited, nervous, and confident all at the same time!  I'm excited at the prospect of improving myself in a number of ways and, in turn, improving our studio and empowering the people around me.  I'm nervous at the fact that total transparency in the process also means that regardless of success or failure, this is a journey I must share publicly in the effort to serve as an example for future testers.  I'm confident that I have grasped the meaning of this testing method, and that I have outlined goals and quests that will benefit me, my family, and my studio in profound ways!

The UBBT is not about showing up on a predetermined date to perform a few forms, spar a few rounds, and break a few boards. It's about showing up EVERY DAY and setting a consistent example of the values we teach through martial arts.  The very process of this style of testing is way outside-the-box thinking meant to stretch the participant and those they serve.

That said, for the next year, I'll be sharing my successes, failures, fears, strengths, weaknesses, goals, hopes, dreams, and all that makes up my journey to my next degree.  I certainly hope you will follow and even participate because this is not just about me--it's about us!

Let's rock 2018!!
